Batang Ai Dam,Lubok Antu
The Batang Ai Dam is a concrete-face rock-fill dam located in Lubok Antu,Sri Aman,Sarawak. Batang Ai is located on the border with Kalimantan,Indonesia. Before the hydroelectric dam was created, there were at least 40+ longhouses located along the river. Construction started 1982 with the river diversion work and the last turbine completed in 1985. The government had to relocate tenants from 26 longhouses to Lubok Antu and the higher areas. The power station comprises four 25 MW turbines, totalling the installed capacity to 100 MW. The station is operated by Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation. Now,this hydroelectric dam is the main source of electrical power in that area and the scenery around the dam are very attractive.
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre
The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established in 1975 to care for wild animals which have either been found injured in the forest, orphaned, or were previously kept as illegal pets. It is the biggest Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak. Together with the Sepilok Orang utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sabah this is the most well known rehabilitation center for tourists to visit. You will enjoy watching them during feeding time which happens everyday at 9 am and 3 pm .
Miri Petroleum Museum
Petroleum Museum MIri is located at Canada Hill, or better known as Bukit Tenaga.It was opened to public officially on 20th May 2005. The museum opens every day except Mondays and every public holiday. The admission fee is free of charge. There are various exhibits displayed that shows us the history of the petroleum industry in Malaysia. All displays are related to the petroleum industry including its contributions to the country. The Grand Old Lady which is located just outside of the museum is the first oil rig discovered and erected in Miri. This is one of the historical monuments in Miri.
Sri Aman Tidal Bore Festival/Pesta Benak
Sri Aman is famous for the Benak, or Tidal Bore of the Batang Lupar River. The Tidal bore comes in from the river mouth and fills up the river very rapidly in the course of about 10 minutes. The wave crest is up to 2 to 3 metres high. There is estimated time and dates for when the tidal bore will occur, but the really big ones occur only a couple of times in a year.
Sarawak Cultural Village
Sarawak Cultural Village is located at the foothills of Mount Santubong. This place also the venue for the World Harvest Festival and the Rainforest World Music Festival. It's depicts the heritage of the major racial groups in Sarawak and conveniently portrays their respective lifestyle. The other things you can found here are the Kain Songket (Malay cloth with gold inlay), Pua Kumbu (Iban housewives textiles), Melanau Terendak (sunhat), Bidayuh tambok (basket), Iban parang (swords), Orang Ulu wood carving and Chinese ceramics.
Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary
The Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Sarawak. It is significant for Orang Utan conservation. Together with Batang Ai National Park,these protected areas contain an estimated 1,400 Orang Utans. It form a World Heritage Site named the "Transborder Rainforest Heritage of Borneo with Betung Kerihun National Park in Indonesia.
Ayam Pansuh/ "Chicken in Bamboo"
Ayam pansuh is called chicken in bamboo in english because it is cooked in a bamboo. The juice of bamboo gives it a unique taste. This is one of Dayak's favourite dishes in Sarawak.
Kuching Cat Museum
It is a very interesting museum about every aspect of cats, including history and their influence on every aspect of human culture. There are many collections about cat here such as the statues, decoration, handicraft, poster, toys, drawing and souvenir. The entry is free and it is worth to visit this place for the cat lover.
Sarawak Laksa
It is actually very different from the curry laksa as the soup contains no curry at all. It has a base of Sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, lemon grass and coconut milk, topped with omelette strips, chicken strips, prawns, fresh coriander and optionally lime. Ingredients such as bean sprouts, (sliced) fried tofu or other seafood are sometimes added. Sarawak laksa is the most popular dish in Sarawak.
Diverse Communities
Sarawak is one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo. It is the largest Malaysian state. Sarawak has a population of over 2.4 million. The highest populations can be found in the state’s capital Kuching (681,901), followed by Miri (358,020), Mukah (293,514) and Samarahan (246,782). Sarawak has 27 ethnic groups which consist of Iban, Chinese, Malay, Bidayuh, Melanau, Orang Ulu and others. The Ibans comprise the largest percentage (almost 30%) of Sarawak's population. The people practise a variety of religions including Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, ancestor worship, Baha'ism and animism. The large majority of Ibans practise Christianity. However, like most other ethnic groups in Sarawak, they still observe many of their traditional rituals and beliefs. Sarawak celebrates colourful festivals such as the Gawai Dayak (Harvest Festival), Gawai Kenyalang (Hornbill, or the God of War Festival), Penuaian Padi and Gawai Antu (Festival of The Dead).
